Haciendo presión Using pressure is a group exhibition of contemporary Cuban printmaking at the 11th Havana Biennial organized and curated by the artists. It will take place in the Cabaña, at the K13 - K14 flags.

This exhibition looks at what is happening in current Cuban printmaking from artists who have matured in the past 15 years, a generation that gives continuity and vindication to Cuban printmaking. In recent decades, it shows greater changes and evolutionary development as the expressive media in Cuban art. Nelson Herrera Isla

Haciendo presión is the first exhibition of a more comprehensive project, under the same name that seeks to continuing the legacy of La huella multiple and promote contemporary printmaking Cuban art.

Participating artists: Osmeivy Ortega, Aliosky García, Octavio Irving, Orlando Montalván, Alejandro Sainz, Julio Cesar Peña, Anyelmaidelìn Calzadilla, Hanoi Pérez, Yamilis Brito, Dania Fleites, Liudmila Lopez, Norberto Marrero y Janette Brossard.

Invited artists: Eduardo Hernàndez, Ibrahim Miranda y Sandra Ramos.

On view at the printmaking workshop at the Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, Havana during the 11th Havana Bienal

Learning to draw is not limited to the mere reproduction of an image; learning to print is not limited to a technical process. Both capabilities are found to be a means to explore sensitivities of expression, experience, and play with the aesthetic consciousness.

This first work of the Project: La línea extendida (The extended line) is collaboration between youth in Venezuela and Cuba through children’s drawings. Children from the hills of Caracas, Venezuela first created drawings. These drawings were then reproduced and translated in Cuba using various printmaking techniques by young Cuban artists at the Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro.

This collaboration among people of diverse cultural backgrounds reverses the technical process usually seen children’s coloring books. This provokes the artists to exploit the process by changing the archived multiple image, one of the thousand of processes in which the reproduction of an image is inspired by a succession of creative acts.

I wish I could be at the 11th Havana Biennial this May. Instead, I am here in Western Mass dreaming of art in Cuba. The theme for the Biennial this year is: ‘Artistic Practices and the Social Imaginary’. Cuban Art News has couple of great articles about the 115 invited artists and 10 curatorial projects on view during the biennial.

The Biennial is a wonderful experience to see Cuban art all over the city and often some of the best exhibitions receive little attention. I have asked my friends and collaborators to share their projects and exhibitions during the Havana Biennial. Suenos de la Biennial is a series of infrequent letters announcing these projects and exhibitions

Paulina Márquez sent me a recent email about Artistas por la Barrio, a 4-day action, May 17- 20 with 70 artists working in the neighborhood of the Municipio Plaza de la Revolución at Ermita y San Pedro streets. This community surrounds the Plaza of the Revolution. For those who have not been to been to Havana the Plaza of the Revolution is on a high hill over looking the city where all the major rallies take place. There is grand tower similar stature to the Washington Monument in DC in the center of the plaza.

Curated and organized by Paulina Márquez and Salomé Garcia, Artistas por la Barrio plans to bring art into the community through workshops in paper mache, digital photography, alternative printmaking techniques, creating murals and music and theater events.

Seventy artists working in a community far from the center of the biennial activities should be an event worth seeing.

Some of my friends involved with Artistas por la Barrio include: Luis Lamothe, Orlando Montalván, Julio Cesar Peña, Alejandro Saínz, Aliosky García, Jeannette Brossard, Norberto Marrero, Yamilis Brito. All these artists have worked with on the RTP book collaborations and you can see their art on the Mis Amigos page and RTP Flickr pages.

Paulina Márquez can contacted by e-mail at paulim3000@gmail.com or proyectospau@gmail.com and telephone 535 2581179

Here is 17 page pdf file from Paulina. ARTISTAS POR EL BARRIO

Sadly some of the images for Kathy’s work had the worst color shifts imaginable due a combination of gallery lighting, natural lighting and a point & shoot camera so I did not include them. BUT there is a full-color catalog with a great essay by Ruth Rogers, curator of special collections at Wellesley College available for $25. Please contact the gallery for more information.

It is hard to imagine the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Embargo / Blockade by signed by John Kennedy arrived this week on February 3rd. The Center for Democracy in the Americas gives us a brief history and helps conceptualize the complexity of a truly strange policy that belongs buried with the dinosaurs.

Janette Brossard’s poignant 12 etchings Time is Caged give us an understanding of la lucha (the struggle) for all Cubans.

TIME IS CAGED AND INDEFINITELY MOVING AMONG TWELVE WORDS defines a Cuban’s perception of time, a reality where past and present are juxtaposed. The year is presented as a constantly repeating unit, each month characterized by a specific situation. This work represents an insular chronicle, where human beings are immerse in a repetitive non-linear cycle. The calendar does not belong to a specific year, but to every and all years. That time does not move is a sensation permeating every person living on this stressful and oppressive island.

Please join Red Trillium Press Thursday February 9 at the Hartford Art School for opening of Rare Beauty.

The University of Hartford’s Joseloff Gallery at the Hartford Art School is proud to present the exhibition Rare Beauty: Contemporary Visions in Book Arts, a group exhibition featuring the work of six distinguished printmakers and book artists, in the gallery from January 17 through February 19, 2012.

Rare Beauty will showcase the work of the 2011/2012 Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chairs in the printmaking department at the Hartford Art School: Steven Daiber, Pati Scobey, and Barb Tetenbaum, as well as three invited guest artists: Julie Chen, Kathy Kuehn, and Wilber H. Schilling.

The exhibition comprises a diverse sampling of handmade books in all forms, demonstrating the
incredible scope of the craft. From traditional, recognizable book forms to interactive boxes, textwrapped jawbones, embroidered scrolls, and installations; the books in this exhibition stretch all familiar boundaries of what defines a “book”.

The title of the exhibition, Rare Beauty, was inspired by a quote from one of the artists included in
the exhibition, Wilber H. Schilling, who said, “In this increasingly digital age, a carefully handmade, inspiringly clever and tactile book is a rare beauty.”

In addition to the exhibition, there will be a panel discussion held on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 3:30-5:00pm in the Wilde Auditorium, directly followed by a public reception in the Joseloff gallery from 5-7pm. The panel will include all six artists in the exhibition and will be moderated by Ruth Rogers, curator of special collections at Wellesley College.

Rare Beauty was organized by Lisa Gaumond, managing director of the Joseloff Gallery, with the help of the faculty of the Hartford Art School printmaking department: Jim Lee, Jenni Freidman, and John Willis.

A full-color catalog will be available for $25. Please contact the gallery for more information.

To read more about Rare Beauty, and see examples of the work, please visit the exhibition page.
